Being born before lunar landings means I remember when TV was black and white, it also means I was in on computers when an operator was expected to operate.
An operator was someone trained in the dark art of making computers do stuff
A computer was an expensive investment and they were built to last long enough that it made sense training operators

These days you can almost finish your training course before a new version of whatever you are training for is out
As computers, and their periferals are now being developed faster than the software that is supposed to run them - it no longer inspires the same level of trust.
This being said I didn't trust them then, and I don't trust them now - they're machines and they break.
The fact that the operating software is made by humans does not mitigate this - rather quite the opposite.

So being a modernday Don Quixote is hard ungrateful work - much as it was in the ficticiuos day of the literary reference -
but at least it bears the somewhat nebulous reward of a "vague feeling of usefullness".
